Why Breastfeed Vs Formula Feed?

I know they say, and I know it’s true, that bf helps build a stronger immune system. But my 7 year old niece, who was strictly bf for 9 months, is constantly getting sick and ear infections, and my 5 year old nephew (her brother), who was only bf for 5 weeks, is sick possibly even less than my niece, and has never had an ear infection.
The reason I am asking is bc I went to the doctor today and she told me I need to start supplementing with formula because my body doesn’t seem to be producing enough breastmilk for my 5 month old. I feel so disappointed. Not only is bf easier and cheaper, but of course, more of a bond and healthier for baby.
So I was thinking about why bf vs formula and realized of any kids I know, (ages 5 and up), there doesn’t seem to be a difference in the amount they get sick whether they were bf or not.
Will the difference be noticeable as they get older. Or is there other reasons that breastfeeding is healthier for baby than formula?
I am just trying to make myself feel better at the thought that I may not be able to breastfeed anymore, as my doctor warned me once baby gets more formula, she may forgo the breastfeeding altogether.
Oh and doctor gave me a prescription for something that may increase breast milk, as well, I am going to start drinking more water each day (I don’t think I’ve been drinking enough), but does anyone else have any other recommendations on how I may be able to increase my breastmilk supply (pumping doesn’t make a whole lot of difference, and I don’t have the time to do it often enough) or is it too late now that baby is older?
Thanks all.
